The Institute of Engineering Technology at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Brno has a rich and long history that dates back to the beginnings of technical education in the Czech Republic. It was founded in 1950 as part of the then Technical University Dr. Edvard Beneš in Brno, which in 1956 transformed into the Brno University of Technology (BUT). Since its inception, the institute has focused on teaching and research in the field of production technologies, which at the time was key to the development of Czechoslovak industry.

Over the years, the institute has undergone several significant changes and modernizations. In the 1960s and 1970s, there was a significant expansion of research activities and laboratory equipment, which enabled deeper cooperation with industrial enterprises and the application of research results in practice. During this time, the institute focused on areas such as machining, forming, welding and other manufacturing processes, which are today its key specializations.

In the 1990s, after political changes and the transformation of the Czech economy, the institute focused on innovation and modern technologies. New international collaborations and projects were established, which brought new ones research opportunities and broadened the horizons of both academics and students. This development continues to this day, when the institute plays an important role in the field of additive manufacturing, optimization of production processes and development of advanced materials.
